# Drupal for the Grassroots: Drutopia in the Age of Drupal CMS
Drupal CMS and Drupal Canvas (fka experience builder) are calculated to bring Drupal's power to fast-moving teams who would otherwise not have the time or patience. Gain the perspective on the promise and pitfalls of this new direction from the team that, more than a decade ago, saw the risk in Drupal's retreat to the enterprise— and maintained the vision of bringing Drupal to people and groups without much money ever since. In the meantime, Drupal in some ways caught up, parallel to our vision; in many ways surpassed us; and in other ways still has so far to go (as do we).
The community now recognizes the landscape changed for websites and those who build them. More and more organizations use SaaS solutions like SquareSpace and Wix, Wordpress continues to outpace Drupal, and Backdrop fills a need for those who feel Drupal grew too complex. Those with larger budgets and more specialized needs still turn to Drupal. Yet modern Drupal has a lot to offer groups without big budgets. Drutopia set out at the dawn of modern Drupal to close the affordability gap for groups that could benefit from Drupal, and has a lot of hard-earned knowledge to share with the new community initiatives.
Drupal can only succeed in the crowded world of fast launches and easy customization if it retains its core identity. Structured content, repeatable configuration, and powerful workflows must—and can—all stay central to Drupal initiatives for marketers and everybody else. We will look at how.
## Learning objectives
* See why a happy marriage between structured content and Canvas are essential for the future of Drupal, and have some ideas of how to get there.
* Come to your own conclusions on when LibreSaaS (open source software as a service) is a good economic vehicle for Drupal CMS goals, and when it is not (yet).
* Apply the Drutopia team's decade of learning in serving low-budget clients to building sites with Recipes and Canvas.
## Target audience
Anybody building, or building with, the initiatives at the heart of Drupal CMS, especially Recipes and Canvas.
## Difficulty level
## Prerequisites
Trying (to build) Drupal Recipes, Drupal Canvas (fka Experience Builder), or Drupal CMS
## Synopsis for socials
What Drupal CMS and Drupal Canvas can achieve— from the perspective of a team that's been moving in that direction (at low budget speed) for a decade before these became strategic initiatives.
