Default settings allow people to apply for a regular account, which would enable them to leave comments without re-filling in their name and e-mail, basically is it.

Because the only information collected when people register are a username and an e-mail address, there's very little information on which to base approving or denying an account application, which makes the doing so a bit of a waste of time.

I think our options are:

  • Turn off the ability of people to create accounts,
  • Collect enough information about why people want an account to give a shot at distinguishing spammers, or
  • Allow registration without approval, and when someone spams, delete their account and all their comments in one step (which is easier than deleting individual anonymous comments)

Ok, I just found the setting in /admin/config/people/accounts and
changed it so only administrators can register accounts.

@joshua_davis is this working for you and good enough for now - only administrators can register accounts? Do you need time to assess?
